Traffic accidents happen frequently, and small collisions are particularly difficult to completely avoid. When an accident occurs, how to properly handle and resolve the situation can not only reduce disputes but also effectively safeguard one's rights.
1️⃣ Stay Calm and Ensure Safety
Stop your vehicle immediately and turn on hazard lights
Check for injuries to yourself and passengers
If anyone is injured, call 999 for police and ambulance assistance
If safe, place a warning triangle 50–100 meters behind your vehicle
2️⃣ Determine Whether to Call the Police
According to the Road Traffic Ordinance, you must report the accident if:
There are injuries or fatalities
Government or third-party property is damaged (e.g. traffic lights, railings)
The other party is uncooperative or suspected of being under the influence of alcohol/drugs
Parties are unable to exchange information
If it’s a minor traffic accident and both parties agree to settle privately, you may choose not to report—but ensure proper documentation is completed.
3️⃣ Gather Evidence and Exchange Information
Take photos of the scene (wide, medium, and close-up shots)
Record the other driver’s name, contact info, license plate, and insurance details
Look for witnesses and note their contact information
Review dashcam footage—it can serve as strong evidence in court
4️⃣ Decide Between Private Settlement or Police Report
A private settlement saves time but carries risks—use a formal agreement
Reporting to police provides official documentation, helpful for insurance claims and legal procedures
5️⃣ Notify Your Insurance Company
Regardless of whether you file a claim, notify your insurer within 24 hours
Provide basic details such as time, location, and information about the other party
📄 Tips for Giving a Statement (if police are involved)
Stick to objective facts—avoid speculation
Review your statement carefully before signing
