The Hong Kong Transport Department requires the following categories of vehicles to undergo annual inspection in order to renew their vehicle licence:
• Private cars that are 6 years old or above from the date of first registration*
• Light goods vehicles not exceeding 1.9 tonnes in gross vehicle weight, that are 6 years old or above from the date of first registration
• All commercial vehicles and goods vehicles
*A registered owner of any private car manufactured in 2019 or before who wishes to apply for a licence with effect from 1 January 2026 or after, must submit his or her private car for examination at a Designated Car Testing Centre
