The Hong Kong Transport Department requires the following categories of vehicles to undergo annual inspection in order to renew their vehicle licence:
• Private cars that are 6 years old or above from the date of first registration*
• Light goods vehicles not exceeding 1.9 tonnes in gross vehicle weight, that are 6 years old or above from the date of first registration
• All commercial vehicles and goods vehicles
*Private cars manufactured for 6 years or more (private cars manufactured in 2017 or before must be examined before licence renewal, private cars manufactured in 2018 must be examined for the renewal of licence with effect from 1 January 2025 or after)
